A Typical Day: Key Timings
Hospitality days at York Racecourse follow a consistent structure, though exact timings vary by fixture. Here’s how a standard raceday runs:
11:15 — Gates open. Guests can arrive from this point and make their way to their hospitality area.
12:30 — Lunch is served. Whether you’re in a private box or a restaurant, the main dining service begins at this point.
14:00 — First race. The afternoon’s racing card gets under way.
15:30 — Afternoon tea is served. A lighter offering mid-afternoon, usually covering sweet and savoury items.
17:20 — Last race. The final race of the day.
Bar closure falls half an hour after the start of the last race.
All timings are subject to change. For specific dates — particularly during the Ebor Festival or music nights where the schedule may differ — please check with AR Events ahead of your visit.
Dress Code for Hospitality Guests
Each hospitality area at York Racecourse has its own dress code. Guests who arrive without meeting the requirements for their specific area will be refused entry at the gate. There is a clothing rental option available on site — collared shirts, jackets, and ties can be hired for a small refundable deposit — but it’s far simpler to arrive correctly dressed.
Gentlemen are required to wear a collared shirt, jacket, and tie. The exception is the September Sunday fixture, where this requirement is relaxed.
Ladies have more flexibility, but the standard expectation at York hospitality is smart occasion wear. Wedding guest attire is a useful benchmark — you won’t be overdressed.
Large bags are not permitted in the hospitality areas. Any guests arriving with a large bag will be directed to the Left Luggage point at the main entrance before proceeding to their hospitality area.
Please make sure everyone in your party has read the dress code in advance, particularly if some guests are less familiar with racecourse standards. It only takes one person to create an avoidable problem on the day.
What to Expect Between the Races

The Parade Ring is a short walk from most hospitality areas and is worth visiting in the build-up to each race. Seeing the horses close up before they head to the track gives racing fans and non-racegoers alike a much better sense of what’s happening on the card. Tote betting points are reserved for hospitality guests in most private boxes, so placing a wager is straightforward without queuing in the main concourse.
For groups where some guests are new to a raceday, the rhythm of the day tends to take care of itself. Lunch runs into the racing, afternoon tea fills the mid-afternoon slot, and the bar runs through to after the last race. Most guests find the day moves faster than expected.
